Online fraud and hacking attempts are quite common nowadays. You must have heard about the recent news of malware attack. It was one of the biggest security breach where data of around 32 Lakh debit cards from leading banks of India is being compromised.

As precautionary measures, banks have asked their customers to change their ATM PINs. Banks are likely to replace debit cards of customers in order to prevent misuse. In addition to changing your ATM PIN, you should also take following precautionary measures in order to prevent online fraud or hacking of your information.

1. Change your internet banking password.

It is generally seen that people don’t internet banking password for a long time.In order to prevent misuse and theft of information, it is recommended to change your internet banking password on regular basis.

2. Use complex password.

You should not use a password which is easy to guess. Try to make a complex password. Never use birth date or mobile number as your password.

3. Same password for all accounts.

It is seen that many people use the same password for facebook, Gmail, Internet banking etc. The reason is it is easy to remember. However, it is recommended not to keep the same password for all your accounts.

4. Don’t store your password in password manager or at online vault

5. Don’t use public WiFi or cybercafé for internet banking transactions.

6. Always use website with https://

Never share your information on a non-secure site. Always use site with https. Information exchange happening on https site is more secure as it happens in a secure manner (encrypted).

7. Never open phishing email.

You should never open phishing email or email with an unknown attachment. Identification of phishing email is easy. This type of emails are generic in nature asking for help or showing a sense of urgency. These types of emails are used for online fraud or for hacking.

8. Invest in good antivirus and malware protection software.

You should install a good antivirus and malware protection software on the desktop or laptop. It will help to prevent online fraud or hacking attempt.

9. Delete e-mail after reading

You should delete sensitive email with account information as soon as you read it. Keeping old email in the account is risky.

10. Never share your detail with anyone over the phone or in social media.

The last important tip to prevent online fraud and hacking is installing only legitimate app on your smart phone. It is also advisable to use antivirus software on your smart phone.
